Choghadiya is the quick muhurat system that Gujarati and Rajasthani families - and traders across India - check before opening a shop, starting a journey or paying a big bill. It splits the day (sunrise to sunset) and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into eight periods each, about 90 minutes long.
The seven choghadiyas
| Choghadiya | Ruled by | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Moon | Everything - the best |
| Shubh | Jupiter | Puja, marriage-related work, education |
| Labh | Mercury | Business, new accounts, buying |
| Char | Venus | Travel and movement |
| Udveg | Sun | Government work by some; otherwise avoided |
| Kaal | Saturn | Avoided (some use it for wealth-gathering) |
| Rog | Mars | Avoided (some use it for disputes, surgery by custom) |
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the three "good" choghadiyas; Char is good for travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are generally avoided.
How the order works
The first day choghadiya is ruled by the weekday's lord: Sunday starts with Udveg (Sun), Monday with Amrit (Moon), Tuesday Rog (Mars), Wednesday Labh (Mercury), Thursday Shubh (Jupiter), Friday Char (Venus), Saturday Kaal (Saturn). After that they follow a fixed cycle: Udveg → Char → Labh → Amrit → Kaal → Shubh → Rog, and the eighth part repeats the first.
The night choghadiya starts differently (Sunday night with Shubh, Monday night with Char, and so on) and moves through the cycle in a different step. You don't need to remember it - our free panchang lists all 16 for your city.
Why the times differ from printed charts
Choghadiya charts on calendars assume a 12-hour day. In Ahmedabad the daytime is about 13.4 hours in June and 10.9 hours in December, so each "90-minute" choghadiya is really about 82 to 100 minutes long and the clock times move every day. Always use the times for your own city and date.
Choghadiya vs a full muhurat
Choghadiya is for everyday, short decisions. For a griha pravesh, a vehicle, a wedding or property, a full muhurat also looks at the tithi, the nakshatra, Bhadra, Kharmas and your own birth star. That is what our personal muhurat finder does; see also the griha pravesh muhurat guide.
