Moving into a new home is one of the few events for which almost every Hindu family wants a proper muhurat. The trouble is that "griha pravesh muhurat 2026" lists give the same dates to everyone - while a pandit also checks the head of the family's birth star. Here is how the choice is actually made.
Three kinds of griha pravesh
- Apurva - entering a newly built house for the first time. Full muhurat rules apply.
- Sapurva - re-entering after a long absence or after travel.
- Dvandvah - entering after renovation or after a calamity.
Rented flats: many families do a simple puja on a good day without a full muhurat; others treat it like apurva. Follow your family custom.
What a good date needs
1. A suitable nakshatra. The fixed (sthira) and soft nakshatras are preferred: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati.
2. A suitable tithi. Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi are used, Shukla paksha preferred. Avoid Amavasya and the rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi).
3. A suitable weekday. Tuesday is avoided almost everywhere, and many avoid Sunday; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are preferred.
4. No blocking period. Avoid:
- Kharmas - when the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena. In 2026-27 that is roughly 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027 and 15 March to 14 April 2027 (calculated from the Sun's sidereal ingress; your panchang may differ by a few hours).
- Adhik maas - the extra lunar month (2026 had an Adhik Jyeshtha from mid-May to mid-June).
- Venus or Jupiter combust (asta) - when the planet is too close to the Sun. Venus was combust in the second half of October 2026; in 2027 Venus is combust from about early July to mid-September and Jupiter from about mid-August to mid-September.
- Chaturmas - many families avoid griha pravesh between Devshayani and Devuthani Ekadashi.
- Bhadra (Vishti karana) and Rahu kaal for the actual entry time.
5. Your own star. A pandit checks tara bala - counting from your birth nakshatra to the day's nakshatra, the 3rd, 5th and 7th (Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha) are avoided - and chandra bala, the day's Moon in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th sign from your Moon sign. Lists can't do this; our muhurat finder does, if you give your birth details.
Picking the time on the day
Once the date is fixed, the entry time should fall when the good nakshatra and tithi are both running, outside Rahu kaal, ideally in a good choghadiya or the fixed (sthira) lagnas - Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha. Many families enter in the morning after sunrise.
On the day
- Keep a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut at the entrance.
- Enter with the right foot first, the woman of the house usually carrying the kalash.
- Do the Ganesh puja and Vastu shanti or havan if your family does it.
- Boil milk until it overflows in the new kitchen - a sign of abundance.
- Don't leave the house empty the first night.
Quick checklist
- Nakshatra and tithi from the list above

Our muhurat finder runs this checklist on the next 30-90 days for your city and gives you the best dates with time windows.
